Here is an example of a local effort, that had a low cost, and high impact.

Cub Scout Pack 303, in Chanhassen, MN, has an on-going effort to provide support for troops in Iraq. One of the pack leaders obtained a “wish” list from her contact, a soldier stationed north of Baghdad. The pack solicited donations of goods and money from members and others.  They sent several boxes to the troops.  Here is the letter they received in response:

Dear Patti, Thank you for the generous offer and kind words.  We are so very grateful for your support.

I am the Cdr of HHC 1-128th Infantry, out of Eau Claire, WI; We have been in Iraq since Dec. 12, 2004; most of the soldiers are from the Western Wisconsin area.  I am, oddly, from Chaska!  In fact, I know Jesse very well, he is a cool guy.  We are stationed at a place called FOB (forward operating base) ~~~~~ which is located about ~~~~ miles north of Baghdad.  It’s dangerous here but we think we are making a difference helping the Iraqi people experience freedom.  All of the soldiers in my company are men.

We like baby wipes, chewy candy (tootsie rolls, bitto honey, etc); old sports magazines; flower seeds, grass seed, microwave popcorn.  We have lots of toiletries from the unit before us.  We really don’t need much; and appreciate most knowing that you are back home making our country strong.  This experience really makes us appreciate the freedoms we enjoy in America.  Thank You!

Best Regards, Brice
