February 2, 1494 - Native Americans begin to be used as slaves by Italian
explorer Christopher Columbus.
February 2, 1624 - The New Amsterdam settlement is established by Dutch
colonists. It would be renamed New York by the British.
February 2, 1848 - The Mexican-American War ends with the signing of the
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo by American and Mexican government
representatives. Its terms included the United States giving Mexico $15
million for the Southwest.
February 2, 1863 - Mark Twain publishes his first writing, in the Virginia
City Enterprise. Samuel Clemens used the pseudonym as the author of his
writings.
