February 15, 1758 - In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, mustard is introduced
to America.
February 15, 1764 - St. Louis, Missouri, is founded at the place where the
Missouri and Mississippi Rivers join together. Begun as a French trading
post, the city also served as the stepping off point in the exploration of
the West.
February 15, 1804 - Slavery is abolished in New Jersey, the last northern
state to outlaw the practice.
February 15, 1820 - Susan B. Anthony, suffragist, is born.
February 15, 1879 - In an early form of equality, female lawyers are
allowed to argue cases before the Supreme Court, as decided upon by
Congress.

February 15, 1898 - The USS Maine is sunk by explosions in Havana harbor.
The Maine was in Cuba to protect the interests there of Americans during a
rebellion against Spanish rule. Widely believed to have been sabotaged
under orders from Spain, a later investigation conducted in 1976 decided
that the explosion was caused by a fire that ignited ammunition stocks.
February 15, 1903 - Russian immigrant Rose Michtom sells the first teddy
bear, naming the stuffed animal after President Teddy Roosevelt.
February 15, 1933 - In Miami, Florida, an assassin attempts to kill
President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt. The bullets hit Chicago mayor Anton
Cernak, who later died from his wounds.
February 15, 1951 - The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission places the first
atomic reactor used for medical therapy into service.
