February 20, 1942 - The first American flying ace of WW II becomes Edward O'Hare. A Navy fighter pilot, O'Hare destroyed five Japanese bombers in the short span of four minutes as they approached his aircraft carrier near the Solomon Islands.

February 20, 1962 - The first American orbital space flight, the Friendship 7, takes John Glenn around the Earth three times.
