February 27, 1788 - As a result of the kidnapping of a group of free slaves, who were forced back into slavery on the island of Martinique, Massachusetts declares the slave trade illegal.

February 27, 1827 - New Orleans hosts its first Mardi Gras.

February 27, 1862 - The infamous Andersonville prison in Georgia receives its first prisoners. Nearly one-fourth of the inmates held in the prison died.

February 27, 1879 - Saccharine (artificial sweetener) is discovered by Constantine Fahlberg, the result of work done at John Hopkins University.

February 27, 1902 - John Steinbeck, award winning author (Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden), is born.
