January 1, 1735 - Paul Revere, American Revolution patriot, is born.

January 1, 1752 - Betsy Ross, credited with sewing the first American flag, is born.

January 1, 1850 - Minot's Ledge, near Boston, is lighted. It is the first iron-piling lighthouse.

January 1, 1863 - The Emancipation Proclamation is issued by President Abraham Lincoln. It calls for the liberation of black slaves in southern states.

January 1, 1892 - Ellis Island Immigration Station opens in New York.

January 1, 1895 - J. Edgar Hoover, FBI director for more than 25 years, is born.

January 1, 1898 - New York City is created as Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx are combined.
