January 6, 1759 - George Washington marries Martha Dandridge Custis. Martha Washington would become the first woman to be depicted on a postage stamp.

January 6, 1838 - The telegraph service, developed by Samuel Morse, is demonstrated for the first time.

January 6, 1878 - Carl Sandburg, poet, is born.

January 6, 1919 - Theodore Roosevelt, former president, dies in New York at the age of 60.

January 6, 1942 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt announces the U.S. armament that will be produced for use in World War II. In just the first year of production, 45,000 aircraft, 45,000 tanks, 20,000 antiaircraft guns and 8 million tons in new ships were scheduled. The addition of women to the work force enable this to be accomplished.

January 6, 1942 - The first commercial aircraft to complete the round the world trip was a Pan Am Pacific Clipper, which arrived in New York on this date.
