January 7, 1782 - The first commercial bank in the United States opens. It is the Bank of North America, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

January 7, 1789 - In order to choose state electors, the first U.S. presidential election is held. At that time, only white men who owned property were allowed to vote.

January 7, 1800 - Millard Fillmore, 13th president, is born.

January 7, 1887 - The first round the world trip by bicycle is accomplished on this day by Thomas Stevens, who rode a Columbia high-wheeler.
