January 9, 1788 - Connecticut becomes a state.

January 9, 1793 - The first successful balloon flight in the United States is made by Jean-Pierre Blanchard.

January 9, 1913 - Richard M. Nixon, 37th president, is born.

January 9, 1929 - The organization Seeing Eye is incorporated in Tennessee to train dogs to guide the blind.

January 9, 1945 - The Island of Luzon, in the Philippines, is invaded by American troops.

January 9, 1952 - President Harry S. Truman issues a call to Americans to prepare to meet the communist threat with vigorous action. In his State of the Union address, he declares that they are "moving through a perilous time."

January 9, 1958 - Americans catch their first glimpse of the Toyota and Datsun (Nissan) cars as they make their first appearance in the United States at the Imported Motor Car Show in Los Angeles.
