January 10, 1738 - Ethan Allen, Revolutionary War hero, is born.

January 10, 1776 - The pamphlet Common Sense, written by American colonist Thomas Paine, is published. In it, Paine argues against the concept of monarchy and advocates for the separation of the colonies from England.

January 10, 1811 - Fifty-six African-Americans are killed by federal troops as the Louisiana Slave Revolt is crushed.

January 10, 1964 - George Washington Carver, agronomist and inventor, is born.

January 10, 1878 - Senator A. A. Sergeant from California introduces a constitutional amendment granting the right to vote to women. Forty-two years later, it becomes law.

January 10, 1901 - The American oil industry is born with an oil strike in Beaumont, Texas.

January 10, 1923 - President Harding orders the remaining troops stationed in Germany to return home, four years after the end of World War I.

January 10, 1942 - The Ford Motor Company makes arrangements to begin producing Jeeps for World War II.

January 10, 1967 - President Johnson requests a 6 percent surcharge on personal and corporate income taxes to help with the expenses of the Vietnam War. The surcharge is later approved.
