January 19, 1809 - Edgar Allen Poe, poet and author, is born.

January 19, 1840 - Captain Charles Wilkes claims the eastern Antarctic coast for the United States.

January 19, 1847 - Mexicans in Taos, New Mexico kill the American-born governor, Charles Bent. They were angry about the behavior of the American soldiers who occupied the city.

January 19, 1903 - President Theodore Roosevelt exchanges greetings with King Edward VII in the first transatlantic radio broadcast between heads of state.
