January 21, 1789 - A book written by an American author becomes the first novel to be published in America. The authorship of the book, entitled The Power of Sympathy or the Triumph of Nature Founded in Truth, is shrouded in mystery. It was published in Boston, Massachusetts.

January 21, 1824 - Stonewall (Thomas) Jackson, Confederate general, is born.

January 21, 1915 - The first Kiwanis club meeting is held in Detroit, Michigan.

January 21, 1916 - The American National Board of Review, which began as the National Board of Censorship, declares that it will not accept nudity in films.

January 21, 1950 - Alger Hiss is convicted of perjury regarding his alleged involvement in a Soviet spy ring before and during WW II.
