January 24, 1848 - Gold is discovered in California by James Marshall. Coincidentally, six days later Mexico ceded California to the United States and the Gold Rush began!

January 24, 1913 - Mark Goodson, TV game show producer (What's My Line?, I've Got a Secret, The Price is Right), is born.

January 24, 1922 - Christian Nelson receives a patent for the Eskimo Pie.

January 24, 1927 - Alfred Hitchcock's first film, The Pleasure Garden, debuts in England.
