January 25, 1890 - The United Mine Workers of America union is formed by coal miners.

January 25, 1890 - Nellie Bly (Elizabeth Cameron) completes her flight around the world in 72 days, 6 hours, 11 minutes, and 14 seconds. She beat the time in the novel Around the World in 80 Days.

January 25, 1915 - Alexander Graham Bell makes the first transatlantic telephone call, calling Thomas Watson in San Francisco from New York City. His inventions, leading to the creation of the microphone and telephone, were originally intended to assist the deaf.

January 25, 1947 - Al Capone, Chicago gangster, dies of syphilis in Miami.

January 25, 1949 - The Emmy is given out by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for the first time.
