January 27, 1825 - The tragic "Trail of Tears" begins when Indian
Territory is approved by the U.S. Congress. Native Americans living in the
eastern United States are forcibly relocated to the west.
January 27, 1880 - Thomas Edison receives a patent for the incandescent
electric light.
January 27, 1888 - The National Geographic Society is founded in
Washington, D.C.
January 27, 1913 - On this day, the International Olympic committee strips
Jim Thorpe of the medals he earned at the 192 Stockholm Olympics. It had
been revealed that in 1909 and 1910 he had been paid to play minor-league
baseball, which technically made him a professional.
January 27, 1918 - The first Tarzan movie, Tarzan of the Apes, is
released. Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote the novel that the silent movie was
based on.

January 27, 1931 - Francis Davis receives a patent for a power steering
system. At the time, he was an employee of the Pierce Arrow Motor Car
Company.
January 27, 1943 - American bombers run their first mission against the
Germans, bombing the Wilhelmshaven port.
January 27, 1951 - Nevada is first used as a test site for nuclear
detonations.
January 27, 1959 - 110 candidates are selected by NASA to be examined and
tested for the first U.S. space flight.
January 27, 1967 - Three astronauts are killed during a launch-pad fire at
Cape Canaveral, Florida. They are Virgil Grissom, Edward H. White II, and
Roger B. Chafee.
January 27, 1973 - The Paris Peace Accords are signed by representatives
of the United States and North Vietnam. The Accords resulted in the
official end of the U.S. involvement in the war, but did not end it.
