January 28, 1787 - Former slaves Absalom Jones and Richard Allen found the Free Africa Society in Pennsylvania.

January 28, 1878 - The first edition of The Yale News is published, becoming the first college daily paper.

January 28, 1878 - The first commercial phone exchange opens in New Haven, Connecticut. Eight lines provided for twenty-one phones.

January 28, 1902 - Andrew Carnegie establishes the Carnegie Foundation on this day with $10 million. He would go on to leave $350 million at his death.

January 28, 1912 - Jackson Pollock, artist (painter), is born.

January 28, 1916 - Louis Brandeis is nominated to the Supreme Court by President Woodrow Wilson. The nomination is controversial, but Brandeis does get approved and becomes the first Jew to serve on the high court.

January 28, 1917 - American forces stopped their hunt for Pancho Villa. They had been searching for him for eleven months.

January 28, 1986 - The space shuttle Challenger explodes 73 seconds from its lift off from Cape Canaveral, Florida. All aboard are killed.
