January 29, 1834 - Federal troops are used for the first time to calm a
labor dispute. The workers building the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal rioted
over labor conditions. President Andrew Jackson authorized the use of the
military.
January 29, 1845 - The New York Evening Mirror publishes Edgar Allen Poe's
poem "The Raven".
January 29, 1861 - Kansas becomes the 34th state.
