January 30, 1835 - For the first time, an attempt is made to assassinate a
U.S. president, Andrew Jackson. He survived the attempted shooting that
occurred in the House chamber of the U.S. Capitol.
January 30, 1847 - Yerba Buena, a settlement in California, is renamed San
Francisco.
January 30, 1882 - Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd president, is born.
January 30, 1917 - The Original Dixieland Jazz Band completes the first
jazz recording.
January 30, 1933 - Fan favorite The Lone Ranger premieres on
Detroit's WXYZ radio station.

January 30, 1942 - The commercial automobile industry produces its last
consumer vehicles today and tomorrow. Immediately after, the plants were
retooled for production of military vehicles.
January 30, 1964 - The Ranger 6 was launched. It was unmanned and carrying
television cameras. Destination: the moon.
January 30, 1968 - During the Tet Offensive, the U.S. embassy in Saigon is
attacked, leading Americans to reluctantly conclude that the Vietnam War
was far from over.
January 30, 1996 - AIDS becomes the leading cause of death for Americans
aged 25 to 44, announced by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention.
