March 1, 1864 - Ulysses S. Grant is promoted to lieutenant general during the American Civil War. Previously, George Washington was the only other person to achieve that rank.

March 1, 1872 - Yellowstone becomes the country's first national park.

March 1, 1877 - Residents of Deadwood, South Dakota, hang Jack McCall, the murderer of Wild Bill Hickok.

March 1, 1917 - The Zimmerman Telegram is published in America. It was a secret message from Germany to Mexico, offering Mexico territory in the United States if they would take Germany's side in WWI. The publication of the telegram was an element in the decision of the United States to enter the war.

March 1, 1932 - Charles Lindbergh, Jr. is kidnapped from the Lindbergh mansion in Hopewell, New Jersey. A ransom of $50,000 was demanded.

March 1, 1937 - U.S. Steel and the Congress of Industrial Organizations sign their first union contract. According to the terms of the contract, the workers were given 40 hour work weeks, overtime pay, and a raise.

March 1, 1961 - President John F. Kennedy establishes the Peace Corps, intended to help underdeveloped nations by sending civilians who would assist them with their needs.
