March 2, 1793 - Sam Houston,
president of the Republic of Texas, is born.
March 2, 1807 - The U.S. Congress passes an act to "prohibit the
importation of slaves into any port or place within the jurisdiction of
the United States . . . from any foreign kingdom, place, or country."
Slavery itself was not abolished.
March 2, 1861 - Union general John C. Fremont declares martial law in
Missouri, and proclaims freedom for all of its slaves. He was relieved of
his command.
March 2, 1877 - An electoral commission determines the result of the 1876
presidential election. Ballot fraud was suspected on both sides. The
commission declares Rutherford Hayes as the president.

March 2, 1904 - Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss), author, is born.
March 2, 1927 - Babe Ruth becomes the highest-paid baseball player as he
signs a contract with the New York Yankees for $210,000.
March 2, 1949 - The crew aboard an Air Force B-50 Superfortress becomes
the first to fly nonstop around the world.
March 2, 1962 - 100 points is scored in a basketball game by one player.
Wilt Chamberlain achieves that score in a game between the Philadelphia
Warriors and the New York Knicks.
