March 4, 1861 - William Penn is
granted the province of Pennsylvania by King Charles II. The intent was to
provide a place where Quakers were free to worship.
March 4, 1776 - General George Washington places cannons able to threaten
the British near Boston, Massachusetts. The British soon had to evacuate
the city and its harbor.
March 4, 1789 - The nation's new Constitution takes effect as the first
session of the U.S. Congress opens in New York City.
March 4, 1840 - New York City is the site of the world's first commercial
photography studio.
March 4, 1861 - Abraham Lincoln is inaugurated as the 16th president.
