March 6, 1836 - After withstanding 13 days of attacks, the men defending
the Alamo were overrun by Mexican forces. Almost all of the 184 men
defending the fort were killed.
March 6, 1857 - The Dred Scott
decision was handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Scott and his wife
had filed a suit for their freedom, claiming that if their master took
them to any state or territory in which slavery was forbidden, they should
be set free. The court ruled against them, claiming that Congress and
territorial governments did not have the power to exclude slavery from
American territories.
March 6, 1886 - The Knights of Labor state a strike against the
Southwestern Railroad. Approximately 9,000 members went on strike,
severely affecting transcoastal trade.
March 6, 1896 - Motor City saw its first car driven on the streets of its
town. Rumor has it that the driver, Charles Brady King, was told to get a
horse after the car broke down.

received in an assassination attempt on Franklin D. Roosevelt, then
president-elect.
March 6, 1951 - Julius and Ethel Rosenberg go on trial for espionage. They
were charged with selling atomic secrets to the Soviet Union.
March 6, 1964 - Cassius Clay, heavyweight boxing champion, takes a new
name, Muhammad Ali.
