March 8, 1796 - The U.S. Supreme Court issues its first ruling on the
constitutionality of congressional law. Its decision in Hylton V. United
States that the carriage tax is constitutional.
March 8, 1857 - In an attempt to demand better pay and working conditions,
garment workers in New York City stage a protest. Police are called and
force them to stop.

March 8, 1862 - The Confederate run ironclad Virginia (also known as the
Merrimac) sinks a frigate, runs one aground, and destroys a wooden sloop.
The Union fleet had been sailing off Newport News, Virginia, when they
were attacked.
