March 11, 1861 - The Permanent Constitution of the Confederate States of America is adopted by South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas. Upon its adoption, the states formalized their claim to be a separate government.

March 11, 1903 - Lawrence Welk, bandleader, is born.

March 11, 1918 - America sees the first of its Spanish flu victims. Altogether, more than 600,000 Americans died from the flu.

March 11, 1927 - The first armored truck robbery in America occurs near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Flatheads Gang accomplished this by planting a land mine that the truck ran over.

March 11, 1942 - U.S. general Douglas MacArthur retreats from the island of Corregidor during WWII. More than 90,000 troops, both American and Filipino, left behind at Corregidor and the Bataan Peninsula were forced to surrender to the Japanese.

March 11, 1960 - NASA launches the Pioneer V space probe, which spent three months orbiting the sun and sending back data.
