March 14, 1743 - The first town meeting is held in Boston. The idea caught
hold, and many towns began to hold town meetings.
March 14, 1794 - Eli Whitney receives a patent for the cotton gin. With
this invention, the south became a sea of cotton, greatly increasing the
desire for cheap labor (slaves).
March 14, 1812 - In order to finance the War of 1812 against Great
Britain, America's first war bond was issued. It was worth approximately
11 million dollars.
