March 20, 1852 - Uncle Tom's Cabin, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, is published. Stowe wrote the antislavery book in reaction to new fugitive slave laws.

March 20, 1854 - The Republican party is founded. It was founded by antislavery activists as part of the effort to prevent slavery from spreading throughout the western part of the United States.

March 20, 1917 - A special session of Congress is called by President Woodrow Wilson in order to declare war on Germany.
