philanthropist, is born.
March 21, 1939 - Kate Smith records her famous version of the song God

March 21, 1942 - Plutonium is coined by Glenn Seaborg and Arthur Wahl as a
name for the 94th element. Of course, at the time it didn't become common
knowledge because it occurred in a secret report.
March 21, 1963 - Alcatraz Prison, located in San Francisco Bay, stops
housing prisoners.

March 21, 1965 - In an effort to support and draw attention to the voting
rights of African-Americans, Martin Luther King, Jr. and more than 3,000
demonstrators began their march from Selma, Alabama. This third attempt to
march together from Selma to the state capitol at Montgomery was
successful, with the help of U.S. Army and National Guard troops present
to protect their safety.
March 21, 1967 - It is reported in the North Vietnamese press that Ho Chi
Minh rejected an offer of peace presented by President Lyndon Johnson.
March 21, 1980 - America announces that all of its athletes will boycott
the Moscow Olympics. The boycott was intended to send a message about the
1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
