March 22, 1622 - At Jamestown, Virginia, 347 English settlers are killed by Powhatan Indians.

March 22, 1790 - America's first Secretary of State takes office - Thomas Jefferson.

March 22, 1794 - In a tentative first step, Congress outlaws slave trading from the U.S. to any foreign country. Slavery would remain legal in the United States.
