March 23, 1775 - Patrick Henry utters his famous line, "I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!" He was speaking about the fight for independence from the British.

March 23, 1806 - As the Pacific Coast winter season ends, Lewis and Clark leave Fort Clatsop and head home.

March 23, 1836 - The U.S. Mint begins to use a steam-powered coin press in coin production.

March 23, 1857 - Elisha Otis's first passenger elevator begins service in New York City.

March 23, 1862 - Confederate General Stonewall Jackson suffers one of his first major defeats. His attempt to attack Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley is unsuccessful.
