March 25, 1634 - St. Mary's settlement, located on St. Clement's Island
off Maryland, is founded.
March 25, 1639 - Construction begins in Dedham, MA on the first canal to
provide industrial water power.
March 25, 1865 - The Confederacy launches its first attack of the Civil
War, as General Robert E. Lee and his men charge Union infantry at Fort
Stedman, in Virginia.

March 25, 1879 - Cheyenne chief Little Wolf surrenders himself and his
followers to the U.S. Army. He was attempting to lead them back to their
homelands in Montana, but agree to returned to a reservation in Indian
Territory.
March 25, 1911 - Young female garment workers are killed when a fire
erupts at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York City. When the
working conditions at the company became known, some of which contributed
to the death of the 146 workers, the American public urged lawmakers to
enact factory reform.
March 25, 1934 - Gloria Steinem, activist and author, is born. She was the
founder of Ms. Magazine.
