September 30, 1777 - York, Pennsylvania becomes the nation's temporary capital as the Continental Congress leaves Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War.

September 30, 1868 - Little Women, written by Louisa May Alcott, is published.

September 30, 1882 - The first hydroelectric power plant in the world begins work on the Fox River in Appleton, Wisconsin.

September 30, 1889 - Women in Wyoming become the first in the nation to be granted the right to vote.
